Description
Up at auction is a Versailles 12 Cartes Postales En Couleurs Du Chateau. Booklet of 12 Post Cards. These are divided. No writing. Unposted and not used. In very good condition. Versailles, at first, ws only a poor village of Ile-de-France, the name of which we find mentioned in 1075. In 1624, Louis ZIII had a small hunting-box built there, which was enlarged in 1631, soon after the famous Day of Dupes (November 11, 1630). The Marble Court still reminds us of the proportions of that first castle. Louis XIV in his turn loved Versailles and started, in 1661, the work that was to transform it little by little. Andre Le Nostre started with the gardens. A new palace was erected to surround the little castle on the side of the gardens (1668-1675). After the Peace of Nimwegen, the castle, under the supervision of J. H. Mansart, took the proportions it still has nowadays (1678-1689). In 1682, Louis XIV made it his residence and the seat of the Government. The French Revolution started there with the States General, in 1789 )Oath of the Tennis-Court, June 20 - days of the 5th and6th of October). In 1830, King Louis Philippe rescued Versailles from neglect and decay by dedicating it "To All the Glories of France". The collections of the stately Museum of History he gathered there total to day more than 8,000 paintings and sculptures, not counting objects of art. On the 18th of January 1871, the German Empire was proclaimed in the Galerie des Glaces. On the 28th of June 1919, in the same Gallery, was signed the Treaty that put an end to the First World War. Beautiful post cards that are nice with some shine to them. Shipping is .35. Thanks for looking.Post Cards in Booklet:
